 The mainstream activities of refining and smelting are supported by an accredited analytical service provided by our laboratory, using state-of–the-art equipment and techniques. A critical aspect of the refining and smelting services is prompt and accurate sampling and analysis of the gold and silver content of the deposit prior to treatment, using carefully controlled sampling and analytical techniques.
There are two broad areas of focus in evaluation. The first is policing of the product, which is concerned with internal process control at every stage of Rand Refinery's operations. The other is the fire assay process which involves evaluation of the product on arrival and before departure.

An X-ray analysis of samples can confirm an assay within seconds, ensuring same day valuation. An assaying service is also provided to the manufacturing jewellery industry, as well as gold and silver standards for other analytical laboratories.
Our laboratory is accredited to supply "Good Delivery" gold to the LBMA (London Bullion Market Association), "Good Delivery" silver to the LME (London Metal Exchange) in London, Comex Bars to the New York Mercantile Exchange (COMEX Division), 1000gram (1Kg) bars to the Tokyo Commodity Exchange (TOCOM) and Good Delivery gold to the Dubai Metals and Commodity Centre (DMCC).
The laboratory is the only facility in the Southern Hemisphere to have LBMA referee status and one of only five LBMA appointed referees in the world. This means that Rand Refinery is used by the LBMA to assess potential new entrants to the LBMA Good Delivery list, and to monitor other refineries worldwide to ensure that they achieve the required standards of assaying and bar purity.
Technical and Analytical information – sampling and assay
This information is published on our website immediately after assay finalisation and is in the form of a Precious Metal Receipt and Batch Look-up. Only depositors have access to the site and can draw down the information required once they have applied for a username. A training manual is available and Rand Refinery will consider providing training to customers who request it.
