Value-Added Products

For centuries, due to its rarity and durability, gold has been considered one of the most precious metals, and its value has been used as the standard for many currencies as well as a method of payment.  It is a glittering sign of wealth and it has been the means of preserving wealth, especially during times of economic adversity or in periods of war and natural disasters. In many parts of the world, gold is regarded as a continuing store of value and a safe haven against uncertainty and in recent years has experienced an upsurge of interest from investors.

Rand Refinery’s focus has evolved from refining and smelting to include beneficiation

To meet changing customer needs, Rand Refinery has successfully diversified its operations. No longer merely a convenient link in the gold production chain, the refinery is a vital component of its clients’ and shareholders’ beneficiation strategies as it has become imperative for these companies to add downstream manufacturing activities to their skills set. As such, Rand Refinery is a conduit through which industry can be involved in beneficiation through the refinery’s production of semi-manufactured products for the jewellery industry.

Rand Refinery Limited acts as agent for selected gold producers in the refining, marketing and sale of their gold production. In so doing, we have liaison arrangements with Members of the LBMA in London for the sale and distribution of gold refined by Rand Refinery into Value Added Products.

To cater to the rapidly changing product requirements in international markets, the refinery had to develop sophisticated equipment to produce certain items. Most of this equipment was custom-designed by in-house experts. As a result, Rand Refinery now operates a thoroughly modern facility on the "just-in-time" principle, which expedites product conversion with minimum inventory holding.

As part of their continued efforts to provide an efficient service, Rand Refinery will be the first refinery worldwide to use High Speed Gold Electrolysis (HSGE) technology when its HSGE plant is completely installed in 2009. The technology is 10 times faster than the old Wohlwill process and will reduce gold stock by as much as 60%, resulting in significant cost savings and facilitating more accurate metal accounting. The plant will also offer significant environmental benefits as it will greatly reduce the quantity of aggressive reagents (acids) needed, which makes the scrubbing process to remove them from the system significantly more cost effective. The HSGE is based on the same technical principles of Rand Refinery’s successful High Speed Silver Electrolysis plant.

The refinery produces a full range of gold and silver products which include Good Delivery bars, a range of cast bars, minted bars, the famous Krugerrand, other coin blanks and a range of gold and silver semi-fabricated products for use by the jewellery and dental industries.
